Importance of the first colostrum

In calves, immunoglobulins are absorbed through the intestines for approximately 24 hours after birth. Immediately after birth, the closure of the intestinal wall for these large molecules begins in a continuous process until the immunoglobulins are no longer absorbed after 24 hours. Therefore, it is important to start giving colostrum to the calf as soon as possible after birth.

Additionally, it is essential to use colostrum that is collected immediately after calving from the cow. If it is the cow's own colostrum, this is often the case.

In some cases, calves receive colostrum powder obtained from the market. It is important that this colostrum powder is produced from the first colostrum.
